Picture-in-picture (PiP) shrinks the video into a small player, allowing users to watch videos in a floating window, so they can keep an eye on the content while interacting with other sites or applications.
If you have this feature enabled, all you need to do is turn the picture in picture option on under the player settings. Go to the CUSTOMIZATION tab and find the buttons section.
A PiP button will show in the bottom right corner of the player.
Picture-in-picture is fully supported in Google Chrome, Safari, MS Edge and Opera.
When it comes to mobile platforms, Android Chrome and iOS Safari are supported.
Restrictions and considerations
There are certain restrictions in other browsers and operating systems. Note that certain features will be unavailable when the player is in PiP mode.
In the Firefox browser, PiP is supported for the user, however, no impact can actually be made on the behavior since JS API is not available. This means that the browser is in full control of the feature and unexpected behaviors can be displayed, especially if player monetization is enabled.
Similarly, Android Chrome supports PiP, but the default behavior cannot be affected via JS API. Here's how it works: open Chrome, go to a website that contains a video and play it in fullscreen. From there, press the Home button to go to your Android Home Screen and the video will automatically transition to picture-in-picture mode.
Mac Safari:
- Visibility of ads when monetizing - There is a possibility the ads won’t be in user’s view if the browser is not in focus
- With monetization off, when PiP is enabled, it will work properly if all the videos are of the same type (.mp4 for example). Issues might be experienced with multiple video renditions (.mp4 and hls for example).
iOS Safari:
- If monetization is enabled, no problems are detected with Brid parser. However, if Google IMA parser is used, the same ads visibility issues as with Mac Safari are noticed.
- When monetization is disabled, it works properly with both .mp4 and hls videos, provided that the same video type is used.
Overlays, banners, as well as branded canvas are disabled due to a high possibility they won’t be in the user's view.
When PiP is enabled, the next video preview option would be unavailable since it will not be visible to the user.
The pause video content when out of view option is disabled when PiP mode activated to prevent the content from pausing.
Sticky player feature is also unavailable when the picture-in-picture option is on.
Note that viewability pixels will be fired only if the original player is in view.
